Help! Our 96' C280 (80k) has started making a whining noise as of last night. When I opened the hood to locate it, it seems to be coming from a black box in between the black intake manifold, the noise is a sort of ticking sound. Any idea's?

Also, I assume I need Metric Allen wrenches to remove the cover? What does this box do? Is it safe to drive until a replacement can be obtained?

I have made a couple of phone calls to mechanics in the area and it appears that it is the "Resonator" that resides in between the the intake manifold runners. Apparently this is a known issue with the C280?

Is there a way to disassemble and rebuild? Or is a new unit needed in order to get back in tip-top shape?

Any input would be most appreciated!
