Air conditioning problem--'94 E320 wagon

I had the AC recharged at the dealer; a dye test was done at the time but didn't indicate location of leak. Three months later it didn't work and it was recharged again. Superficial tests for leaks at all the places that were easy to access didn't turn up where the leak was. (No dye test done this time).
The mechanic suggested it could be the evaporator was shot.
My question is this: what needs to be done to definitely diagnose the location of the leak, and what are the chances it will require replacing the evaporator?
Any suggestions on how to approach getting this diagnosed would be appreciated. Thanks. Terry

Dye testing with florescent dye is the surest way going.

If you have a significant evaporator leak it will show the dye on the transmission under the car. The dye is carried there by the condensate coming off the evap from the drains under the car.

Evaporator Leak?

Stevebfl,

Thanks a million for all your help!

My 300 TE was charged with 134 refrigerant last summer. After charging the A/C, the tech checked for leaks using a handheld device. He poked the leak tester in the driver's side, center and passenger side air vents. And all three air vents sounded indicating a leak. According to the tech, my evaporator is leaking. The cold A/C air disappeared after one week. I still haven't had the leak fixed due to the high cost to fix it.

Is the leak really coming from my evaporator or could the leak come from other parts?

Thanks again,

RV
