16 Valve 5-speed swap.
I just purchased a 1987 16 Valve motor with a 5-speed trans. for my 1988 190e.
To replace my 8 Valve motor & Auto trans. Will I need to change any of the Electronics? Has anyone out there done this? Thank You Rich. |

The 16 Valve wire harness is obviously different. The ECU is different, the fuel pump relay is different and of course, you'll need the pedals, neutral safety switch wired and I'm not entirely sure, but the driveshaft length may be different between the auto trans and the Gertag, but the flex discs are different.
BTW, the radiator and pump location is different, the 16V used dual fuel pumps at the gas tank (later model 2.3-8, did also), has a different a/c condensor, different power steering pump and different tachometer. |

On behalf of the 2.3-8 owners out there . . . since you've already made the purchase . . . go for it . . . and take a lot of detailed notes, pictures and inventory all the parts you needed.

I researched replacing the overdrive five speed in my '88 190E 2.6 with the direct drive five speed and limited slip diff from a 16V. (I specifically wanted the 3.07 ratio from a gray market 16V.)
It all appeared to be bolt in, but you will need the driveshaft from the 16V too as the direct drive five speed is shorter than the OD five speed or automatic, so it has a longer driveshaft. Duke |

With out having a donor car THAT(16V engine into 8V) swap will be very costly. Most of the underhood parts are NOT interchangable!

Costly swap-out
You are right on the overall project, but you know how it is with something like this, you start small then it just starts growing from there. The next thing you know you have more money in parts then the car is worth.
I was able to get allmost everything I needed from the doner car. MTI gave me a good list to work from. Rich. |

If we all did a "cost-benefit analysis" for everything we do with our cars, we'd all be driving . . . a Mercedes!
