560 SEC trans leak $$$!!!
 

Hello all-

My 86 560 SEC leaks ATF on the exhaust under the middle of the car. Not a lot but some. Worse after long freeway drives. Took it to a local wrench who I trust and they state that the leak requires removal of the trans. to fix. What could that leak be?? Is $550 out of line? Just checking here. Thanks

check your front tranny seal. This is a $12 part but you have to r and r the tranny to get to it. if it is the rear seal you can do that with tranny in. but it is usually the front one. Nothing you can do about it I am afraid. The pan seal can also cause this but the shop should be able to see this and it is an easy fix.

Thanks. It seems like it was coming from the middle of the tranny more then the front. I read some stuff about pumps leaking and stuff like that. Just trying to get an idea....

The pan seal is your best first bet. $550 for a front seal sounds about right. This is one of the reasons I got rid of my 420Sel four years ago. I had three seals that were leaking, $30 in parts but $1800 in labor to fix. In retrospect, I should've bucked up and kept the car. I really miss that warship.
