Is it possible to get records of maintenance/repairs from MB on a car that was purchased used? Assuming, of couse, that repairs were made at an oficial MB shop.

Yes, you can go to the Dealer and get an MB Net ran.

Benzmac, what do I need to give the dealer? Just the VIN? Purchase receipt? Couple bucks on the sly?

I purchased a used MB earlier this year and got a full computer print out of all MB service on the car. All you need is the VIN. Go to the dealer and if they give you any guff, call MBUSA at 1-800-for-merc. ED

I just made a wasted trip to the local MBZ dealer to request the records on my 300E. The dealer said I needed a letter "authorizing release of the records" from the prior owner, plus proof of ownership of the vehicle. I just need info on my car, not someone's medical records!! I am going to call Mercedes-Benz USA before going to the trouble of getting a letter from the car dealer that sold me the car.

Just got off the phone with MB-USA (800-FOR-MERCEDES) and they were of no help. The "client services" representative was not aware that MB or the dealers have ever released service data and "would always protect the privacy of the prior owner". He said I should contract the prior owner for his records. Thanks a lot! Whats the big deal, I now own the vehicle and would like to know what repairs have been done for my benefit going forward.

I purchased my used E320 from a MB dealer where all of the service had been done. After reading the posts on here about the service records I called the service manager and asked did he have the records and if he did would he fax a copy of them to me. I received the faxed copies today. It did not cost me anything and I saved some money because a lot of the work I was planning to do has already been done - serp belt comes to mind (I will let the one I purchased sit in the trunk for awhile). I was quite surprised to see that they had to install a new head gasket around 68k miles because of an oil leak. I have never had to replace a head gasket on any of the Hondas I have owned at 60k. In addition, it looks like a lot of the bugs were worked out really early on in the life of the Merc.
It seems to me that our Honda is like a Singer sewing machine where the Merc is like a John Deere (John Deere being the best you know).
These records are invaluable.

Sounds like each dealer is different. When I had asked, they referred me to the cashier. She brought my VIN number up and handed me a print out of everything that was on their computer. It showed all the details on my car and all the RO, date, mileage and repair codes for each incident. No questions asked. Of course, as bad as this dealership is, I can understand why it was so easy.

I am all in favor of a free flow of information, but it does seem to me that transactions between you and a dealer are private belong to you and not the car. It seems reasonable that the dealer would need your permission to release any information on work that you paid for.

You cannot call American Express and ask for my transaction history. Why should you be able to do it with MB?

The P.O. of my '85 300D told me the dealer he always used and even gave me the mechanic's name that always worked on his vehicle. He wanted me to be assured that he was on the up-and-up about how well he maintained his Benz. I went to the dealership and although they wouldn't release the records to me, they allowed me to look them over and take as many notes as I needed.
