What error does 40% fixed duty cycle indicate?

Driving around town with a duty cycle meter connected I see that sometimes the duty cycle meter gets stuck at fixed 40%.
Can anyone look up what that means please?

"Open circuit or short circuit to air flow position sensor or position indicator faulty. "

This is from the US 124 CD, so take it with a grain of salt.

That is most probably the correct answer. Below is the picture of my car's air flow meter (potentiometer). You can see that the contact surface is sratched.

The part number for my car's potentiometer is 3 437 224 031. I need to find a new part number to replace it since there is no mention of this part number anywhere on the web. Can I put one from 300E ?

What type of potentiometer do other 2.3l 8v (102982) engine owners have and if someone have replaced the airflow meter housing what is the new part number on the potentiometer?
