89 420 Sel
I recently purchased an 89 420 SEL with 123K miles on it. All services have been performed and the car ran great. It now emits a whining sound from engine area ( doesn't sound like a vacuum leak) that correlates to engine RPM. The local dealer told me it needed a new tranny ($3,500) and also recommended a new timing chain ($4,000).

I've seen the postings on the timing chain and I hope to find a local non-dealer shop to fix it for much less. Any advice on the transmission noise? The car shifts normal and has no other symptoms. Is this related to the B2 piston problem that has so many postings?

You should be able to get the timing chain and related parts replaced for no more that $1,000, even at a dealer. An indie shop will probably be in the $800 range. Rebult trannies are available for $1500 to $2,000 but probably not from a dealer. Do some shopping for the timing chain work. I know that in your area there are 3 MB dealers, Seattle, Eastside, and Tacoma. Plus there are several good indie shops too.

You probably should replace the trans filter. With the pan off check for clutch material. Plugged filters cause a whine and if the reverse clutches are going they will put a lot of clutch material into the pan and filter.
