I don't want to come across as cynical, but having owned a s-load of Mercedes and a Lexus LS400, I believe the sorts of situations that we Mercedes owners find ourselves in on a daily basis simply do not exist in the Lexus world.

Who, for instance, ever heard of undiagnosable problems with Lexus climate control? A Lexus that would not start when hot?

The Lexus dealers that I dealt with were unbelievably courteous and fair and concerned with my satisfaction with the car and their service. One guy I know had a camshaft and assorted components replaced voluntarily by Lexus at 97K because it should not have failed. Does this sound like Mercedes-land to anyone?

A fair question to me is "So why did you sell the Lexus?" Because it did everything so perfectly that it was completely boring. It had no soul.

"Engineered like no other car in the world" has a many meanings.

Well aside from boring I suppose you ought to tell them about the $1000 60k service, about having valves to adjust on a 32V v8, $1200 liquid cystal displays that fail at least as often as MB evaps, AND a miriade of A/C leaks from the most expensive compressor known to mankind (almost $700 for a rebuilt without a clutch) to an evaporator which leaks as often as any MB (It is easier to replace though I will have to give them that).

These are cars intended to be leased and thrown to the first sucker before 60k. Can't tell you the number of prepurchase checks we have done needing a 60k service.

Timing belt on a very unforgiving 32 valve V8. Wish they weren't such a mess as they are bound to start breaking t-belts as the cars get away from those who can or will service them.

Sorry, but the title for most expensive AC compressor probably goes to my 87 Legend coupe. 3 different shops told me $850-950 rebuilt without clutch, depending on which one was installed on my car (they used 2 different compressors in 87!). So now the AC consists of lowering the windows - at least some of them anyway, as the master control switch doesn't allow the rt rear to lower. I replaced the switch for $250 parts and $75 labor a year ago and the part is broken again! So far my 300E has cost a small fraction of the bills on my Acura, almost as good as my Celica GTS.

Sorry, I was refering to manufacturers list prices. Honda nippondenso compressors are some of the cheapest.

As it turns out we used to use Legend compressors for one of the MB compressors untill MB came out with their rebuilt program (I think it was the 10P17c used for 4.2 and 5.6 V8s - we had to shim the mount as the block was thinner). We used to buy new compressors for around $350 without clutches.

Some people have their own price systems. Take Midas they all seam to charge exactly double on all MB brake parts (double list price that is) That makes things higher than they should be. I think you were exposed to such a price.

I have had a 93' LS400 since 10/95 with 15k miles. The car now has 136k and has been dirt cheap to maintain compared to my 3 Mercedes. I had the 60k serv done at 77k(neglect?) at a local Toyota dealer for $850 and it included-tune up,T-belt,rear brakes,oil change,tranny service,etc. The first set of tires (Eagle GA,s ugh!) lasted til almost 70k. The only time I have taken the car to a Lexus dealer was when the power steering pump failed and cost me nearly $1000 bucks to replace. I was out of town at the time and did not have a choice. Other than that this car has been bullet proof and I can see why there is no place like this web site out there.

Please make no mistake, my heart is where the MB is! CTaylor said it right when he mentioned a car with "no soul". My Lexus is a low maint. cloud that can outrun my 300d's but does not get the looks or satisfaction when I drive them. Plus, pumping premium unleaded at the tune of $1.75 makes my heart pound.
