Help! I just got an Eibach Pro-Kit (4 springs) installed on my '00 SLK230. The ABS and ASR lights on the instrument panel lights up and stays on now. I have had the mechanic who installed the springs check all 4 cables, wiggle-tested them, everything is fine. I called 1-800-for-mercedes, and they instructed me to reset the ABS computer by turning the car on, then turning the wheel all the way to the left, then to the right. He says that by doing that will reset the computer and the light should turn off.

I have had the exact same problem with my 87 300E, after installing lowering springs. (Different shop, 2 years ago) and the light is still on.

I heard rumors that I should take it to MB and have them reset the computer. The mechanic installed the springs without disconnecting the battery first, maybe that logged an error code in the computer??? I don't know, it makes sense though.

Does anyone know how to reset the computer and get my ABS back without having to take it to the dealer? My schedule is pretty tight, and I can't find the time to take it to the dealership anytime soon.

Thanks!

p.s. I searched the topic in the tech forum before I wrote this post, seems like other having the same problem but not on a brand new car after installing new springs... must be something I can do....
Thanks!

Jay

Is that possible when installed the spring damaged the ABS sensors ??

I don't believe the ABS Sensors were damaged... They disconnected one cable on the first axle they worked on, then the rest of the axles they installed the spring without having to disconnect anything.

Even if they did, how could it happen on both my Benzes? By two different shops in two different states? I don't think it's a coincidence.... I am beginning to think it is a MB computer logging something like the ABS has been disconnected or something and is awaiting a reset.

For whatever it is worth, I had the full Sportline treatment done to my 87 300E (shocks, lowering springs, sway bars, bushings, spring pads, Sportline tyre size.) and had no problems with any of the warning lights - ASR or ABS included. The MB parts only lowered the car about 1/2 inch total so this may not be definitive in ruling out the springs as the source of the problem. I have the impression that the ASR light stays on a little longer after I replaced the 195/65 tires with the 205/60s, but I may be wrong on that. Did you change tyres/wheels at the same time or earlier? Maybe the combination of wheels/tyres and lowering springs could cause this problem. Good Luck!!

No, I kept the 225/45 17 and 245/40/17 sizes which came with the sport package.

It is likely that the key was turned on while the sensor was disconnected or that the cars wheels were turned while on a lift with the key on.

The fault will have to be removed with a scan tool (removing the battry cable might reset it but it will reset the whole car).

If it was a tire or wheel diameter difference or a sensor reading problem it wouldn't light the light till the car was driven.

BTW the 87 model would be entirely different. It wouldn't keep the light on unless the fault existed; unlike the self-diagnostics in the later car which keeps its memory.

For the 87, the only time you have a light is WHEN the fault is occuring...

As for the other car, I think that Steve's solution is the only one. I think you are having someone other than a Mercedes Tech do the work, aren't you? Any Mercedes Independent should be able to clear and check for codes in these and other systems.

Everyone who responded to my post, thank you!

I made an appointment with the MB dealership to get my computer reset. Yes, I had someone other than Mercedes perform the install. The dealership refused to install such springs for some reason, telling me that the SLK's frame wasn't strong enough to support lowering springs, or something like that.

Does anyone know how long / how hard it is to reset the ABS computer in my '00 SLK? Is it something that can be done in one day or an hour or something? If it's something like a regular computer, I would assume it wouldn't take that long, just plug in and hit reset or something, am I right?

Thanks for all your replies!

Jay
