My a/c system has been leaking freon. I had it checked out twice, no leakes in the engine compatment have been found. My mechanic says it must be the "heater box" that is leaking freon. Its apparently located under the dash of the car. He says it will cost approx $1000 to replace it. Does this sound correct? What exactly is a "heater box" and does this diognosis sound correct?
Thanks |

The part of the A/C that is in the "heater box" is the evaporator, I presume. The only 126 cars we have replaced evaps on are the 90-91 model years; never on anything older. I would get a second opinion.
I also would check the expansion valve which also is inside the dash (but not inside the box). Unless the tech is familiar with MB he may think both pieces are inside which is not the case. Expansion valve leaks are common. |

Thanks for you advice, I will have the expansion valve checked.
