The W124 chassis was designed in conjuction with the W201 (they are the same in many respects) starting in about 1979. When it was introduced to the US in 1986, the W124 300E was astounding. Sure, engines and transmissions have been refined during the production run, and some other changes were made along the way, but the basic chassis and engineering principles are about 25 years old today.
I've been driving our 190E this week in the horrible weather, and it never ceases to amaze me. The body is still tight and the engine is like new. It uses a little oil (not much) but starts right up, idles evenly, and pulls past 200km/h without problem.
A W124 Coupe is a "keeper" in the grand scheme of car ownership. Find a cherry example and enjoy it for years (decades...?) to come.
