I have a 1987 190e 2.3 16v. When I drive the car over uneven roads, the passenger side rear suspension makes a loud bang/clunking noise. Driver side rear is ok. Car has self levelling suspension fitted. Please help its driving me nuts!!!!

clunkity clunk
well you need to jack the car and grab all the links and make sure none are loose. Look at the inner and outer control arm bushings. Also drive the car and pull a little on the parking brake...those can come out of adjustment and rattle quite a bit. The 300e had an upgrade on the parking brake pads tp stop the noise. Check the subframe mounts also. Twist your driveshaft and make sure its not the dreaded flex couplings which suck on mercedes. Sometimes noises are referred sounds. Most of those things you can fix yourself with the exception of the outer control arm bushing which is a pain. But it does clunk when bad.

Many times on cars w/leveling system the accumulators that are actually where the "shock" takes place go bad. When this happens the car will ride hard as there really isn't any shock control. Many times this will destroy the control piston in the strut leg(shock), & then comes the clunking noise!

bumpety bump
Might want to also try the upper mount of the rear shocks. Access is through the trunk. My 1984 190E had the same "clunkety-clunk" sound and it was the upper shock mount that was loose. I know we've got self-leveling suspension (mine's a 1986 2.3-16V), but the loose upper strut may still be valid.

Good luck.

Brian
