back door spontaneously opening in w124

every now and then the rear driver's side door on my 87 300e will just open as I am driving. Thankfully it has only happened when I was driving slowly. At first I thought it could be form the last passenger in the car not shutting the door properly, but a shut the door myself the last time it happened. Occasionally when it happens the interior handle to open the door will be stuck fully out, thus making it so the door won't latch closed. Anyone know why this would happen? Thanks.

dirtysocks,
Try spraying the latch assy with a wd40 type product. The jaws must complete the closing cycle in order to latch. If the mechanism is dirty, binding, the door wont shut. The next step is worn parts, out of adjustment inner door opener handle or broken latch.
