Questions about the 220d
 

I am looking at a 1972 220d w 150000 miles. I was wondering what I should look for. The owner said he was the 3rd owner no rust except rear floorpan behind drivers seat. Uses about pint of oil every 3000 miles (oil change interval). Its a 4 speed and shifts fine. Motor has some blowby but he said not alot. He just put on new tires ,brakes tie rods and a alternator. The interior is good with only a 4 inch tear in the front seat. I have been looking for a 240d but this one came up for sale. Any help would be appreciated. Also are there any major differences between the two other than the body? Thank you.

Actually they are the same body 115 atleast. Not likely a 220d would have as many options including AC. No power windows.

Economically, the car is not worth the repair of any of its major systems including suspension unless you just like doing it. The oil consumption is the indicator of remaining engine life and if those figures are right the motor should have very little blow by and last indefinitely.

He said he would take $1500 for it. The rust concerns me alot. The car is about 4 hours away fom me. Does it sound worth while for the drive? Thanks

Rust is almost never in only one area.

As I pointed out the economics of that car mean that at the first system failure it's history. I'm not sure rust will interfere with your usefull life of such a vehicle.

I pesonally don't believe in $1500 cars for the above reasons unless you need a hobbie. In such a case I wouldn't start with a rusty car. You can never get back the body; everything else can be fixed.
