Could you please answer a question ?
Why would the low and high pressure be low on my car and yet no visible leaks?Does this make sense as my mechanic says he needs to charge the system,(vacuum etc)and thats it.Am i on the right track??
Also is r134a recommend for this car

Hmmmm! Did he use the dye or just the "sniffer"? If not, do the dye. That is the only reliable way to look for a leak. I just went through a similar situation. I end up changing the evaporator, among other things :^(. Big job. I kept the R12.

Well you can't have your cake, etc. If your system is low then you ether charge it or ignor it.

If you want to keep from charging it repeatedly then it would be smart to start the leak detection process at the same time. Find someone who does florescent dye testing and have them add the dye with the refrigerant. Don't make any decision about retro-fitting R134a untill you find your leaks. I wouldn't advise R134a in early 124 body cars such as yours; the compressors are under capacity at least till the 10p17c compressors came outin around 90. Even then I wouldn't put R134a in any system that you aren't changing the compressor as they will all leak in a couple years if not.

Steve, is the 10p17c compressor a Nippondenso unit or something else? Do you know when they actually made the change. I've got an '89 300E and I may be looking at doing some work on the A/C. It would be nice to get your opinion about this.

Jeff,

Look on the back head of the compressor. There will be a label with the MB number and the Nippondenso number. The number 10p17c refers to a 10 cyl compressor (5 pistons working both directions) with a displacement or capacity of 17 (whatevers). The earlier 201 and 124 cars had 10p15c and later 10pa15c compressors. The v8s had 17c compressors from the first nippondensos.

Both systems were upgraded to larger capacities 15s to 17s to 20s to variable displacement compressors in the 210 body in 96.
