Need opinions on used motor I found

I have an 82 240d with a seized engine. In my search, I have found an engine of the same vintage. Here's the story:

Gentleman had similar car with good engine and was rear-ended. In his search for a replacement, he found a nice 82 240d with 300k. He drove it for several miles and returned a few days later to purchase. On his drive home after purchase, the motor began to overheat and he pulled to the side of the road to check. (He said he noticed a rapid rise in temp and pulled over when it reached 100*) He then discovered that the fan belt had been cut. (He suspects the guy that sold it did it to get back at him for low-balling the price.) Anyway, at this time the car was towed to his house without fanfare and he just swapped motors, as he had a good lower mileage motor in the wrecked car. The beltless motor was stored for future use.

It has been stored outside under cover for 18 months. The motor wasn't for sale, per se, but I ran into him and after telling him my situation, he said I could have the other motor for $200.

Worth pursuing? I'm not sure how sturdy these older motors are with regard to a mild or severe overheat. (This is my first Mercedes.)

If I do purchase, anything in particular I should do in prep for first start? I assume a shot of oil in the cylinders would be a good idea, but will defer to y'alls' judgement.

Thanks much,
Ken

take a 27mm socket and a ratchet and see if it stills turns 360. other than that, until you install it or someone takes it apart, the condition is anyone's guess. the head gasket may be just waiting for right day to complete it's destuction. good luck, chuck.
