|
Take out a loan:p
Check the car audio forum What are you looking to do ? the whole system? just the speakers? or just the HU? -Bob |
Just the STEREO. I purchased a Blaupunkt BPV660
CD Receiver with CD Changer Controls from Cruthchfield. It comes with a harness to hook up to the exhisting wires. Where do I look to start removing the original? |
Go to the car stereo section, first read alot of stuff, then get specific.

You might want to take your stereo to one of the reputable audio installation centers in your area. These guys do this stuff all day, every day, and have the tools and knowledge to do it right. And usually they are not that expensive. They can do the installation in an hour....it will probably take you two or three hours. You can save yourself a lot of time and trouble, not to mention $$ by having the stereo unit installed by the experts. And any reputable company will guarantee their work.

Thanks. My fear is that some young kid wouldn't care about my wiring and it would end up irreversible. Also, under the DIY section tab at the top I found some good information. There are a lot of steps to take before removing the original. I could see this adding up to time and dollars.

If you have the crutchfield wiring harness, and you can get the old head unit out, it shouldn't be very hard at all. Assuming you have something like a Becker Grand Prix, the only irreversable step would be having to remove the little locking tabs that hold the heat unit in place, but even then I think you could reinstall it, and it would just be a friction fit kind of thing. With the harness adapter, it should just plug straight together.
|
Thanks. I think I will try to remove the Becker Grand Prix (hopefully). If I run in to trouble I will let the pro take it. I like to try things. Given the right instruction I can succeed!

YES! I found & printed that. Now I need about 80 more degrees in the temperature to give it a try!

I agree with Rockman. It was well worth the $100 it cost me to install my HU. There is barely ANY room to spare in the console. Those guys at Car Toys stood by their work. Do a search for "Car Toys" and you'll find my posts and the ordeal that was the install. At the end of the day I was happy. There is apparently no real good plug and play replacement for the Becker head unit.

___________________________________________________ That's where I had my stereo upgrade installed....and they did a quality job in less than an hour. They do MBs all the time and really have it down. And they do guarantee their work. |
Thanks Rockman59 & 95E320cab. You guys are starting to make me think again about trying. There are no "Car Toys" on this part of the country. I will do a search for installers around. What do you mean by room to spare? When I purchased from crutchfield it asked what I owned and gave me what (should) fit + the MB wiring harness.
