hot start problem- 74 SEL
Have a 74 SEL. Starts immediately when cold- runs great.
Often, when hot, starts hard and takes pumping of the gas to even idle right- then it is fine. I'm getting conflicting opinons as to what it is- some say fuel pump check valve, others say fuel pump. I'm thinking that it wouldn't be the pump itself since it starts great cold (and it is an expensive part) but I'm not sure. Any ideas? (or other possibilities?) |

Trade houses!!
Single digit temps every day this week--i haven't had an engine hot enough to have a hot start problem. Fortunately, the cold start has been perfect. Hope someone can help, i just couldn't resist the attempt at humor.

Hmmm, this is an odd one. You probably need to check for a leaking cold start valve or dripping injectors (not so easy, alas, nor cheap to fix...).
Try running a couple bottles of Techron or Redline fuel treatment through it, it may cure sticky injectors or a dripping cold start valve. otherwise, if the injectors are leaking, you will have to replace them, and they ain't cheap, either. Vapor lock is very unlikely, but not impossible if the dampner is bad, but it that were the case, cold starts would be a problem too. Check the ignition out, too -- could be a bad coil, I suppose.
