Is there any oil in it? Have you checked the linkages?

Question oil/ linkage

have not checked oil recently. Can I check linkages from under the car ? On an american manual you can reset the levers on the side of the tranny for a nuetral position then go from there. Not sure of how linkage is set up on this one any schematic diagrams available ? This is the overdrive 5-speed with the pull up then to left position off of 2nd gear pattern :

As E DREAM says, you can manually operate the shift levers from underneath. First you need to ensure that the clutch is releasing. If the clutch is pressed to the floor can the engine idle?

Once under the car, wiggle the levers until they are all in the neutral position. The first thing to check is for tight linkage. The bushings on the trans levers or the ends at the shifter may be loose. If so, replace them all and properly adjust the shifter.

Good luck,

Another trick is to take it out of gear without the clutch. This can be done by unloading the drivetrain. One way would be to move the car back and forth by hand while pulling on the shifter. Another way is to drive the car and pull on the shifter when closing the throttle.

Unless all of the linkage levers are returning to the 'neutral' position (all aligned with each other), you will not be able to shift into other gears (by design).

My linkage levers were binding on each other to such an extent that shifting was hard. The solution was a clean & lube.

Lightbulb problem solved

Got under the car and discovered that the rubber bushings that connect the shifter rods to the levers on the tranny were dry rot. The first and second gear rod bushing was broken in two peices with the rod not making contact with the lever arm. I set the reverse rod and lever back to neutral position as well as the others. I then replaced all these bushings. Soaked them in hand soap before install to allow them to be pushed into position more easily all is good with all gears now
