Normally NGK's & N/DENSOs are more suited for the asian cars they were designed for, however BMW uses NGK plugs as OE. Some of the best plugs made (for MB's)are Beru & Bosch, both of them offer multi-electrode plugs for Benzes. Stay away from platimun plugs unless the car is less than 4 YR old.

On my 89 190E I trried the Platinum's but could detect no real difference. What do I use? The Bosch "Copper Core" H9DC gapped @ .40. I think the spec calls for them to be gapped at 0.35 but I've always opened them up just a little....seems to burn somewhat more efficiently. Here in Tucson Autozone is running a special on them for 69 cents each!

Here in Toronto its hard to find Bosch copper.C$5 each.
While ngk are 3C$ each.
Bosch platinum is relatively cheap at 3.25C$,at CAnTire and Walmart,cheaper than copper.

Funny how the posts come at appropriate times. I put in a set of Champions yesterday in my 300E. It's what they had, Bosch weren't handy. The manual says .032. I opened them to .035, even this sounds like something left over from the point ignition days. They were factory set at .040. It wouldn't seem that there would be a down side to opening them up to .040 or even greater.

I pulled out a set of Bosch platinum that had opened to .060 and the engine was running decent. I'm ashamed to say how long these plugs were in there.

Any comments about factory spark plug gap specs?

I'm not too confident with Champion plugs in German cars. I say Bosch.

Also, isn't the ignition timing retarded by opening up the plug gap?

We used to do that to 535i Beemers, and open up the valve clearances, to get a smoother idle. Back in the 80's :) E28's
