Need help from a tranny pro??

Not to beat a dead horse, but I have a 94 e420 106000 miles exhibiting very unusual transmission woes. Part of the time it works just fine, then suddenly I will come to a stop and start to take off again and it slips very badly and just creep forward. Sometimes it will suddenly slam back into gear and go again just fine. Other times it will slip for some time but it has always ended up working fine again. When it is working ok it seems perfectly normal. I first thought it was the clutch packs or bands, but it seems to me that if that were the case it would never work correctly. Am I wrong?? Any real tranny pros that have seen anything like this?? The modulator would not affect take off would it? Any tranny tech like to weigh in on this?? I have found a used tranny out of a 24000 mile car for about $1000 but not sure I need to go this far.

On that car & most others from 1990 -95 with the 722.3 transmission, there is a simple fix for that problem.
The band piston seal is bad & the band has too much clearance.

Should take less than 2 hrs to fix the problem. & maybe $30-45 in parts

Any chance I could do this myself, DOC?? I take it the tranny stays in the car and it is in the valve body??

I have just discovered the same slipping symptoms tonight.
Needless to say, I am not thrilled - but at least it got me home.

What I am wondering is if this might be accompanied by a small leak also.

Thanks!

oh yeah... I'm curious if this is something I can do myself too. ;)

chapayne,

Did you ever get this repair done? Is all well again?

Thanks!

-Larry

Repair done

I actually bought a used transmission and swapped it out myself believe it or not. I wasn't sure what the problem was and I found a used one out of a 25000 car. May have spent more than I needed but at least it works great now. I feel pretty good about being able to change it my self.
