Synthetic Oil - Group III and IV?
What's all the controversy about Synthetic Oils?
Seems that many "synthetic" oils are not what we would assume they are. Syntech, which I have used, seems to be particularly questionable... Anyone understands this well enough. Does it mean that only Mobil 1 can be trusted? Can it truly be trusted? I change oil every 5000 mi on a M119 engine (8.5 quarts). It's a pain and I won't do it every 3000 mi.

Answered my own question, POAs are the way to go
http://www.chevron.com/prodserv/baseoils/docs/npra_paper.pdf Good Bye Syntech . . . Don't want something substantially similar, albeit inferior.

Group III & PAOs
Yeah, the group IV PAOs are probably the way to go at this time. I run 0W-40 Mobil 1 in the C43 and 5W-30 Syntec in my wife's 325i for warranty reasons. Eventually I'll put Mobil 1 in the 325.
However, I suspect the III and IV base oils are pretty close in performance. I think the real benefits are in the additive packages, and in how much money a formulating company is willing to spend on testing. If Chevron upgraded their Supreme motor oils to a Group III base oil (I think they are currently a II or II+) at the same price or slightly higher they would have a goldmine.

Mobil 1 switched their 5W-30 and 10W-30 oils from a base IV to a base III to compete with other oil companies who got away with calling petroleum base III oils a synthetic.
If you compare the old Mobil 1 30 weight's pour point with the current ones, you'll see that there was a change when they regressed to base III. Mercedes no longer approve of these two oils. I believe the new 0W-30 is a true base IV and of course so are 0W-40 and 15W-50. |
