Hi there!
I'm wondering if anyone can clear up an issue for me regarding the brakes on a 500E. I've noticed that the front brake rotors on later 500E's are somewhat larger that those on earlier 500E's. I've been told that the later models use 600SL brake calipers and rotors. Does anyone know if this is the case? Yen-Hsen Liem |

Yes- I have even seen 93 500e's with 600sl brakes because some early cars with the "light aluminum" calipers had problems like vibrating brake pedal etc.

Alain,
do you know how difficult/expensive it would be to retrofit the 600SL brakes onto an early '93 500E? ------------------ Cheers! It's a simple rotor & caliper swap......Of course the calipers are not cheap!

As I understand it, a big change was made in '93 to directional rotors. The '92s did indeed have aluminum calipers, but since they were problematic the dealer retrofitted calipers from the 500SL.
As I further understand, the brakes did indeed grow about an inch in diameter for the '94 model year. I personally have the 500SL binders and they work fabulously; doubt if I'll ever do an upgrade beyond perhaps drilled Brembo rotors. ------------------ Best regards, Michael '92 500E '88 300TE |

Does anyone know what the diameter of the 600SL rotor is (front and back)? Thanks.

320mm Front Diameter, 300mm rear. I have done this conversion on my 92 500E.

Lou,
Pardon me for asking but did you do the upgrade because the OE was failing? What kind of "seat-of-the-pants" improvement did the 600 brakes provide? Simple conversion? Thanks. |

I kept warping rotors (track events) and MBNA replaced and upgraded under warranty. They improve track performance when combined with improved (larger stickier) tires but offer no street benefit. Conversion is a simple caliper bolt on / rotor swap. If you really need to improve performance cooling is far cheaper.
