Hello,

I've read posts about MB V8s having slightly stretched timing chains adjusted by using offset woodruff keys on the cam sprockets. Are there offset woodruff keys that could be used on a diesel ('82 240D, '84 300SD)? Lining up the marks on the cam tower shows 4-5 degrees late timing. This is on the 300SD, with 276,000 miles.

Just curious if MB designed the diesels with the same "method" to compensate for late timing (other than replacing the chain and tensioner).

The same keys that work for V8s work on all MB motors (at least those with double row chains).

BUT!!! you can not make timing corrections based upon the marks on the cam stand. The mark on the cam is only good enough to decide which tooth to put the cam gear on. Eighteen degrees between teeth. Its accurate enough to make an 18 deg decision only. To make timing adjustments one must measure the valve openning with a dial indicator versus the crank gear timing marks.

Thanks for the reply. I do intend to use a more accurate method such as a dial indicator. I suppose that would be the only way to know what offset woodruff key to use. In any case, it's good to know I have more options than just replacing the timing chain.
