It might work for short distnces with the top down, if they are very small people, but these are essentially two seaters.

Did this with the now-wife's SL in college a lot - it's illegal here in Calif, fairly dangerous (no restraint and you have to sit sideways) and SERIOUSLY uncomfortable for the 'third wheel'.

Dogs, groceries and beer work best.

I've seen after market seat cushions for the SL's, check some publications.
For the most part I agree, beer & groceries work best in mine.

Not unless you get hold of an European version. They have two little back seats like those in Porsche's, and from the way they look only small child can fit into those seats.

I have a 500sl euro version. I just re-did the interior and replaced the back seat. It is possible for an adult to ride back there, but not very far. I added three sets of seat belts and it works perfectly with three small children. But if the car needs to be used as typical transportation for a family, this would be the wrong purchase.

Just my $.02

If backseat passengers are an issue you could get a SLC. This is the hardtop version of the SL (107 body) and has a real back seat with seatbelts. I have a '76 450SLC.

I had seat belts in the back shelf and rode the kids there all the time. When they got to be more than 4 feet tall it was only practical with the top down.

One time I had my then 22 year old son ride in the back for an hour. He sat sideways and when I stopped he had to crawl out. I think it was uncomfortable.

These rear spaces are not designed for passengers for a good reason. In the event of a crash, the occupant has very little protection. With only lap belts, serious injury is a real risk. You wouldn't let your kids ride in the back of a pickup truck!
