96 C280 Water Pump

While changing the oil in my 1996 C280 the other day, I noticed a small amount ( about a Tablespoon) of antifreeze on the garage floor. Further investigation showed this to be coming from what looked to be the back side of the water pump.

I think that I need to replace the water pump, my question is how? What needs to be removed in order to remove the old water pump? I have heard nightmare stories about having to remove the fan clutch, and how this should be done by the shop, etc....

What is the real story on removal and replacement of the water pump? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I just had the same thing done to my '94 C280, and luckily my mechanic doesn't mind if I hang out with him while he works on the car, so I got to watch the whole procedure. It didn't look that difficult, just a little time consuming. I think it took about 2.5 hours from start to finish. He had to remove the fan shroud and then the fan, and removing the fan seemed to be the trickiest part only because you have to be careful to not harm the radiator when loosening the nut that holds the fan it.

Its a good opportunity to replace the serpentine belt, since you'll have it off the car anyways. The part cost $280 Canadian, straight from the dealer, plus labour and coolant.

1994 C280 water pump replacement.

Hey guys,

I'm new to the forum and Mercedes. I have a 94 C280 that I absolutely love.

The water pump seems to need replacing since coolant leaks profusely from that area.

I have the part in hand, and would appreciate any advice given. I have experience working on automobiles but never Mecedes, and I hear that they can be tricky. Therefore, the more detailed the better.

Also, If anyone knows where I can find a repair manual for this model (1994 C280--104.941 engine) please let me know.

Thanks

Vance

Bumping this old thread to see if I can get any good information or diagrams on changing the water pump on a 96 C280.
