Another oil question
1989 300te...167,000 miles, rebuilt head (about 1000 miles ago). I seem to use oil...about 1 qt, every 600miles. No external leaks, plugs are clean. I use Mobil One 5-30. New York, cold winter.
Mechanic says that he NEVER uses a light weight oil in older engines...wants me to shift to a 10-50 Mobil one. Any thoughts? |
I don't think you will have any problem when switching to the 10W50 oil, and if it cures your oil consumption, then there's your answer.

The only problem with 10W-50 is you can't buy that weight. The only "50" available is 15W or 20W-50. You could use 10W-40. European cars call for xxW-40 as a mininum. I have yet to see where a xxW-30 oil is called for in an European eng.

I have had great results with Mobil 1 15w-50 in both the 190e (220k miles) and the 300E (221k miles). These cars both get a lot of miles per year about 70% highway in the mix. The 300E had an oil leak at the upper cover seal which needed to be replaced, I did that and now the engine seems great. The head has never been off the car, BTW. I would recommend the Mobil 1 15w-50 with confidence. The Mobil One 5w-30 weight seems too light, even for the cold New Year climate that I am familiar with. Haasman |
