I have a 1996 C280 Sport. I noticed the rear view auto dim mirror making rattling noises last week, and upon further inspection this weekend, found that the mirror glass flips forward and backward whenever the car accelerates or decelerates. The mirror glass appears to be loose in the mirror housing. Is this a simple problem that can be easily fixed at home? Can the mirror be "tightened" in any way? Any insight would be appreciated, as I believe that the dealer might want to replace the entire mirror, which will be very costly.

Many times the plastic housing mirror will break. It can be repaired by someone who cares. Replacements are very $$$$.

I can see the shop drooling over an easy but $$$$ repair!

Since we had this type of failure 4-5 years ago & warranty covered them a $500-$700 mirror isn't a big deal. But now when they break & the car is out of warranty YOU don't want to spend $$ for mirror. The mirror will have to be removed, disassembled, & repaired. I came up with a good repair by securing the mirror retaining straps to plastic housing w/tiny sheet metal screws. Again taking time & being careful w/plastic is important.
