Check Engine Lite & Engine Electronics On My E430
I had the "check engine" and "engine electronics" panel light come on my car while driving yesterday. My car has 108K miles on it...anyone have any idea what the problem(s) might be? Fuel system? O2 sensor? I'd like to have SOME kind of idea of what the problem may be BEFORE taking my car to the dealer. Are there any checks/inspections/tests I can do myself? My car is a '98 E430. Help!

Not much you can do yourself.
Have someone ( dealer ? ), check the trouble codes. That will shed some light on the problem. With 100 k + miles, would'nt surprise me if it was the O2 sensor. No point in guessing though. ;) ;) |
Have the system scanned for code(s).
Auto Zone will do that for FREE! Threr are at least 100 problems that can turn the check engine lamp ON! |
Thank you Manny and MB Doc. I'll pay a visit to the local Auto Zone dealer this afternoon to see what the problem might be.
You just gotta love these overly engineered machines! |
Based on the year and model of your Mercedes, my guess would be the Mass Air Sensor which is around a $300 part.

Well I went to Autozone and they were able to do the diagnostics for me - I have the following codes:
P0170 - Fuel compensation value for bank 1 exceeded the specfied range. P0173 - Fuel compensation value for bank 2 exceeded the specified range. P0410 - A malfunction exists int he secondary air injection system. Is anyone familiar with these? Are they a 'dealer only' fix or can I do it myself? What part or parts do I need to check and/or replace? This is a great sight!! Thank you! |

I think you have another thread on this same subject, look for replies there......
