Cam position sensor fault M104

My mechanic is putting a 1995 AMG 3.6 engine from a C36 into a 1996 G-320 for me. It is finally far enough along that we could start it up this morning for a moment.

We are getting a "67 CMP signal L5/1 questionable fault" -- even reset it and restarted and got the same code. The engine will even start with the sensor cable unplugged and gives the same fault.

The old G engine's sensor and its wire harness has a 3 pin connector while the 95 AMG has a round 2 pin sensor connector. We though it would just be a matter of swiching the sensors since they seem to fit just fine.

I also see in the EPG that there is a selection of various shims that can go between the sensor and the head, but we find nothing in the shop manual regarding clearance, etc.

Does anyone know the differences between the two and what we should do to fix the problem?

1. How is the sensor information really used -- we though it would give a different code and not start if the connector was unplugged. Is it involved in the variable cam advance at higher RPM?

2. Hopefully we do not need to change the cam gear, etc.

Thanks

I'm not sure of specifics but a three wire sensor indicates a hall sensor and a two wire is likely an inductive. It is very unlikely that whatever is under the sensor will trigger the other type sensor.
