124 & 201 Door latch adjustments: What's the art?

I have been reading through the threads regarding door latch adjustments for 124's and 201's.

It seems especially with the old 190e that after the lube wears off the door is hard to close once again.

I was told once that if the "striker plate" in the door jam were removed, the door should fit almost perfectly. Is this true?

Is there a procedure/process for adjusting the strike plate? I know it uses an allen bolt etc, the plate can move around a bit, the allen should be fully seated before loosening it etc, but is there a way to position it correctly?

Thanks in advance,

Haasman

I think it's a matter of trial and error. just make slight adjustments to the positioning of the striker until it closes properly.

fist check that teh door is aligned properly - make sure all the gaps are the same - if not - adjust using the hinge bolts. loosen SLIGHTLY and pull the door around.

once that has been done, with the striker loose (as it should be above) but 'nipped' shut the door. carefully open and nip a bit more. re open, re nip etc etc

worked for me. tediuos but works
