when i start my 1985 500sel it puts out a puff of smoke out and then it goes away it is probley just for the milage but i am just wondering.

Usually a small amount of oil collecting around one or more of the valves..

Valve and valve guide wear is pretty common on these engines. So long as it doesn't foul the spark plugs or the oil consumption doesn't go to high, I wouldn't worry yet.

'87 260E--just had the valve seals replaced at 173,000 at the point where it started burning 1qt every 500-600 miles. Also, had the front camshaft seal replaced that had been leaking for some time.
