300TDT speedo - mechanical or elec?
Mea culpa... didn't realize I couldn't tow my '83 300TDT wagon on a dolly with the tranny in neutral. Blew out the trans.
Planning to replace transmission. Would like to buy a take-out trans in advance before going into shop. Is there any easy way to tell if the speedo is electric or mechanical drive? Even the dealer couldn't tell me by VIN due to vehicle's age. Located a replacement electronic drive trans through Potomac, but it won't help if speedo's mechanical. |
Hi,
to my knowledge they are all mechanical connected with a wire at the tail of the transmission where the output shaft is. The wire goes from under the floor trough the engine compartment and then inside. An easy way to find out is to check where your brake booster is, if you see a black hard-to-bend wire that goes in the firewall, thats a good indication it is your speedo. |
they went to electronic pickups with the 300SDs and the 201 chassis cars. All the 123's were mechanical
