Still vibrating
 

I have a 190 e 2.3 1987 benz, i have had a lot of balancing done to the benz, infact the the gsp 9700 was usedthe last time and my car still vibrates when i approach 50-60mph, i also just replacedthe the struts and shock all the way around, the labor was done by kaufamann tires. Im so sick and tired of this problem , i spent over $1000 and i see no differnce in the smoothness of the ride. What should i do? I feel like im on my own. I dont want t o take it to the dealer now and spend another$1000. ive decided to try to remedy the problem on my own by replaceing the steering wheel shock/dampner. I read about it in a search on this forum. what else can i do to see if i can isolate and fix this problem?

Lots of possibilities, most likely of which is warped or unevenly worn front rotors. Try having them checked and ground flat if necessary. Also, worn driveshaft flex joints or bearing bushing can cause a similar problem if the steering wheel does not shake. Loose ball joints, tie rod or center link bushings will accentuate any wheel imbalance, as might worn idler arm bushings.

The steering damper replacement might help if it is badly worn, but in itself cannot eliminate the problem.

Where do you feel the vibration?
In the steering wheel ?
In the seat ?
All of the above ?
I've had wheels balanced with a GSP 9700, and it would not cure my vibration, that was because the machine itself was not calibrated & a brain-dead monkey was operating it. :mad: Lots of $$$$$ wasted there.
Finally took the car to an expert ( with a very old machine ), that balanced my tires to perfection. ;)

Dear mr benz:

Have you tried to change your tires yet? I've seen several cars experiencing speed-related vibrations that would go away by just replacing tires, sometimes just one tire.

The car vibrates left to right and it is more pronounced if im going down a hill.
And especially if i try slowing down from lets say 80 mph or so to about 40 mph.
One guy on this forum told me to change the partially cracked rubber strut mounts. Do you know if this is a diy job...

My 92 500 SEL started to vibrate at 40/45 after three years, it got better as it warmed up. Mb replaced control arms, drive shaft etc, and balanced the wheels on the car. I came back after rotating tires.
The dealer suggested motor mounts (one was collapsed) did that, no big change. They next suspected the lower control arms (hydraulic mounts) slight change. I got rid of the Michelins and got Firestone Turansa LS, (roadforce balance) and had the sway bar bushings replaced along with the steering shock. The side to side wabble seems to be gone.
I would probably start with the bushings first, since the steering daper had been replaced previously.
That was my experience I hope yours is not as expensive, I wanted to dump the car but my wife loves it
