Standard thread - comes off by turning it counterclockwise as you are facing it.

Thanks a million. Got it off and took metal strip off and removed plunger pin and put around 30cc of regular automotive grease in it and it works like new. Will keep ya'll posted on long term effects. Can't be any worse as it wasn't working at all. You could see where the original stuff had leaked out and dirt and grime had built up on one side making fan way out of balance. Good to finally fix something on this car that didn't cost anything. Now if I could fix the hard start while hot problem. Fuel pump buzzes mighty loud--may change out check valve and fuel accumulator.

Fan is loud now, maybe too loud. Should have put 10cc of grease instead of 30cc. Least it won't run hot this summer while idling in traffic with airconditioner on.

Another post says the stuff to use is Toyota silicone fluid for fan clutches. Available in 400, 600 and 1000 centistoke varieties if I remember correctly.
The fan is loud when it's engaged, but it shouldn't be engaged when cold except maybe for a little while after starting. Sixto 95 S420 87 300SDL |

Not engaged
On a 1989 420 SEL, are you saying the fan should not be engaged when cold? Mine turns all the time, even when it is -20c outside.
Do I need a new fan clutch? I see them listed for over $200 (ouch).
