Got a '92 400E with an annoying "ticking" sound when low fan speed is used on climate control. The ticking is worse when you turn right or stop suddenly. The ticking goes away when you engage the recirculate button. Something appears to be dangling on or near the fan blades.
Has anyone had this problem?
I haven't a clue as to how one gets to the fan in the dash.... Your advice is appreciated.
BTW..records from previous owner indicate a new blower and heat exchange install 1.2yrs ago.

On a 124 chassis, you do not have access to the fan from the dash. To get to the blower motor, you need to remove the trim pieces at the bottom of the windshield, the wiper assembly, the cowl area intake covers, windshield drip rails, and other trim, right behind the firewall.Once all the "plastic stuff" is out of the way, you need to remove the top cover off of the blower assembly. It sounds like alot of work, but is pretty straight forward, and simple. It is a dual fan setup with the motor in the center. It seems like you have something that is getting into contact with a fan.

tried doing just that, but gave up the idea for there are so many tidbits to be taken apart. you either have to replace something in there or forget about just inspecting what's wrong. would suggest, leave it to your reputable techque. i had my blower regulator replaced and was charged 4 hours labor plus $400 regulator. hope yours doesn't hurt that much.

thanks for the tips...sounds pretty detailed...I will have to seriously consider whether or not I have to "guts" to perform the work....I will probably just get my mechanic to handle...Thanks for the tips!
Who knows...I might get brave !
