Transmission will start in low gear for first two stop and starts. It will then only drop to second gear. Had a new valve body installed still same problem.

Mercedes for years has made there transmissions start off in second instead of first. so the first thing i'd look for is the shift point of the transmission. then how hard the shift is. please reply with that info for further info. also if the kick down sensor sends a message at a light to "kick down to a lower gear" that It will start of in first and not second.

By any chance have you had a hard time getting into park after such episodes.

The governor has a piston that pops at 10kph. After it moves the governor pressure builds. Once this has taken place it makes enough pressure to keep a reverse interlock engaged (prevents accidental shifting into reverse above 10kph). IT ALSO keeps the trans from going back into first gear as all 83 300Ds would normally. If this governor piston sticks the car won't go back into first gear or park as the shifter would have to move through reverse.

I've seen this happen on at least two 722.3 transmissions including the one in my 84 928 Porsche.

I think the key to my problem is that the transmission will start normally in low gear for the first two starts but then will only downshift to second until it sits for a while,it will then start in low but then after two stops will only start in second!!
quote:
Originally posted by YOUNGESTMBTEC:

Steve, I have no trouble getting in to park, just can't get back to low gear after first two stops.
quote:
Originally posted by stevebfl:
