Updating Ignition Coil? (W124)
 

Hey everyone,, would replacing my ignition coil with something aftermarket cause for power gains,,, or make the car run smoother and more efficiently?? If so, are there any recomendations? I know the ignition systems on these cars can be touchy..

It helps if you post the year and model of your car.

1986-1992 300E's have one ignition coil.

1993 300E's (3.2) and 1993 300E 2.8's / 1994-1995 E320's have M104 engines and have three ignition coils and three high tension leads.

Beware of the hype of aftermarket coils.
Most of them advertise 40, 50, 60 k volt outputs.
Under normal circumstances, a stock engine will never require more than 20 k ohms.
Nowadays, even stock coils are capable of producing 40 - 50 k volts without problems.
If you were to fire at 40 - 50 k volts, chances are your plugwires would start to fire through the insulation, to ground, in a very short time.
Long story short, todays OEM ignition systems DO NOT require, or benefit, from aftermarket hypo-gadgets. ;)
