The switch to open sunroof causes motor to run and I can hear movement, possibly the teleflex cable, in the headliner, but the roof remains stationary. The emergency manual crank in the trunk similarly has no effect. I am of the opinion that the two screws that hold the guide plate of the teleflex control to the roof have rattled loose. Now, my dilemma is how do I reattach these screws? I own the 201 shop manual and every procedure calls for removal of the sunroof headliner, which requires the sunroof to be open 3/4. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Just pull down gently on the cover from the front. There will be little catch pins all the way around. Eventually you'll pull the whole thing off but make sure you bend it down the middle (kind of sagging down the middle). Once you have the cover off, you'll see the bracket in the back. The bracket costs no more than $2, probably less than you gas money. Reminder, it is not exactly repair manual directions but I had to do it myself.

Thanks DC, worked like a charm. Sure enough my bracket was fractured and missing a screw. The part number on the bracket is 126 782 01 40 and it came out to $1.12. I wasn't too thrilled with the screw selection by MB, thread isn't tight enough. Hope the Loctite holds.
