Hmmm....

Don't know why not. I think most current MB's w/automatic use the same "shaft" that sticks out of the console. Even though all knobs are styled a little differently they are all removed in the same manner. Also, as you can see, they are all a little stubborn to remove the first time. Paul

Glad we (collectively) could help. I know it took me a while to figure out how to remove mine and I was overjoyed when it came loose. Walnut Shift Knob, Part # B6 602 0591 - $84.00. Zebrano Shift Knob, Part # B6 602 0590 - $59.00. Burlwood ???? Paul.

What did you use to twist and remove the shifter part number 3? Your hands or pliers? Thanks.

Thanks Paul. It may have been the walnut one. They all look alike.

to Kevin: The part 3 can be twisted by hand, pliers will likely make scratch on it.

No problem!

Glad I could help, Joey and Steve. As my wife constantly reminds me, thanx to my buffoonery, you guys will probably have an opportunity to repay me, and soon. Have fun. Paul

To those who might be interested...I replaced my old rubber shift knob off my '85 300CD-T with one off of a 2000 S-class I bought off of eBay (BTW for $35.00 ). The procedure was as follows: Since the knob and shaft are all one piece on these models (and I believe most 80s MBs), the knob/shaft unit must be removed. After a fairly simple removal of the assembly, I cut (yep, cut) off the old rubber knob down to the shaft. Next, what appears to be a type of washer on the top of the shaft was broken off (by a rapid, repeating twisting action). And finally, I took the shaft to the grinding wheel and made the round shaft less round (I shaved off the sides being VERY careful to make them parallel so when the new shaft was put on it would be straight). This worked like a charm and its a nice snug fit because the new knobs use the same diameter shaft as the old ones.

Pretty simple, looks and feels great!

Steve,

Did you find the knob hard to remove from the shaft after the collar was loosened? I twisted the collar a quarter turn and lowered it down the shaft. But my shift knob won't budge. 'm afraid I'm going to break it if I keep trying to twist it loose. Any ideas?

Mike
