How to change a clutch master cylinder
I have to replace the hydraulic clutch master cylinder but I can't really tell how to get it out. It looks (feels) like there is one bolt behind it but it doesn't look accessible. If that's the bolt is there an access hole somewhere? Does anybody know how to change one?

Since I don't know for sure what model you're working on, I will assume that it is like the ones I have removed.
There is a bolt that goes sideways through the master cylinder and one that goes through the push rod. You will also have to remove the steel tubing at the bottom. Henceforth, if you will thoroughly flush the entire brake and clutch hydraulic system once a year, I can almost guarantee that you will have no more hydraulic problems. If this doesn't help, let us know and we'll dig further. Have a great day, |

Data:
Model: 201.029 Engine: 103.942 VIN: WDBDA29D0MF813954 Its not being changed because of hydraulic problems, the end of the piston (push rod?) broke off and left it flapping in the wind. Fortunatly clutches are optional for me and I could get home. And its the bolt that that goes sideways behind the master cylinder that doesn't look like its going to coperate with my wrench. I was hoping ... The one that goes through the pushrod, to the pedal, is a snapring.

I changed it last night. From looking at the new one it turns out there are two bolts. I just saw one I thought was impossible to get to but there was one even harder. But after staring at it for a little while, upside down, it looked like the whole pedal assembly might come out, 4 bolts hold it to the firewall and one more holds it against the bottom of the dash. I was worried about the brakes but there was a removable pin holding the pedal to the master cylinder. With the bolts and hoses and wires disconnected the whole thing came out. It took some thought to put it back together because the clutch master had separated and the springs, switches and levers all came out separately and had to be re-assembled before I put it back in.
I was able to forward bleed it, with the help of my compressor. I thought I would have to back bleed it. I just don't really like where the slave cylinder is. I know it's protected but its not very easy to get to. |
