airconditioning evaporator replacement

I need to replace the evaporator because it leaks. Has anybody done it themselves & is their a manual available that covers this?
TIA
George

It would be most helpful to know the year and model of your car. I assume that it is a Benz.

Our mind reading skills are a little weak here.

Have a great day,

Despite the absence of pertinent info (as Larry Bible mentioned), you are in for a REAL treat!

MB buries the evaporator deep within the core of the dashboard. So service and replacement requires first that the entire dash be removed!

This is not a task for the faint of heart!

I didn't bother, I let the dealership fool with it (done under extended warranty). Most of the $2800 cost involved nearly 18 hours of labor allotted for dash dissassembly and reinstallation. The evaporator priced out around $800...

You have an '88 300E? This is a big job.

Do a search and you will find tons of info.

I forgot to mention

It's a 1988 300E with over 355,000
It is still in relatively good shape. I will
be replacing the front lower control arms this spring & would like to have airconditioning again.

Not ALL models have super difficult to change evaps, but I'm afraid that your car does indeed. The official flat rate time for the job is in the area of fifteen hours. That's for a pro tech that knows his way around the beast.

Think about it, that's two full days for someone who KNOWS how to do it.

I drove my 300E Tuesday and it was over 70 degrees. After the car sat in the sunlight while I went into vote, the interior heated up some. I just crossed my fingers and started it up. It started blowing ice cold air. I go through this every spring, scared to death that it has sprung a leak over the winter. It looks like I'll probably make it through another summer without having to do this tortuous, and probably frustrating job.

Good luck with yours,
