Benzmac, I sometimes think I,m losing my mind. But the centering sleeve is the bushing type metal peice in the ends of the propeller shaft. It is referred to in the Haynes repair manual of the 190 series. Maybe you call it something else.

Not sure on your model, but all the older ones with a front flex disc have a center sleeve on the input end of the driveshaft.
This keeps the trans output shaft and first section of the driveshaft in line when the flex disc is flexing under load. I usually add a bit of grease here when apart. In the event that they are worn, [ usually out of round], they can be repaired without replacing the shaft altogether. It is a press fit and that may be the same as in your repair section that you mentioned. There again , maybe the newer ones are different. Arthur |

I have never had a problem with this. If the flex disc is OK, everything should be OK with the shaft.

I just purchased the centering bushing / bearing for 300SD (P/N 115-410-00-32) the flex coupling is like new. Since I have the engine and transmission out I'm replacing the input and output seals and the centering bushing as it showing wear on one side.

quote: Good idea to do it now. They wear in one spot as they have pressure on the same side. Only time the other side has any is in reverse. A worn one will shorten the life of the flex coupling and cause driveline vibrations. |
