muffler fell off
my muffler fell off, '88 300e; i got stuck in a snow bank a few weeks back and i think it stressed the exhaust system- the car was bottoming on hard packed snow at the rear;
ive got the muffler and it looks a little rusted around the joint where it connects to the pipe; has anyone rewelded such a thing, or is it a sign for a new system (kinda expensive) btw, its not that noisy without the muffler, so im wondering if attaching an extension or bosal pipe/muffler thing will suffice. |
I've never found that any of the aftermarket mufflers sound right on a Mercedes (Walker, Borla, Bosal, etc.)....but they don't cost as much either. If yours is worth saving, and OEM, just pop over to the nearest muffler shop and they'll weld you up a patch pipe and reinstall for probably under $30.00. If you're able to weld yourself, get a piece of repair pipe and MIG it on. You might need to make a flange first, and weld the patch pipe to it, then weld the flange to the end of the muffler itself.

The center muffler got knocked off my old 280E after hitting a big pothole on a road trip. Rather than replace it ($$$), I found a small town mechanic who spent a few hours with it and a torch. He did a great job welding it back up and it's still on the car! My bro drives it now. Cost = $50 and a case of beer (he agreed to continue welding it after closing if I picked up the beer for him). ;)
