1991 300e almost goes off (but doesn't) when stopped
 

I have a 91 300E (85K miles) that after driving for a while and coming to a stop it will shake (like it is about to shut down) but it recovers immediately. Drive a few more blocks and come to a stop light same symptom. During summer of last year the following were replaced:
EGR by an indie
spark plugs (Bosch HD)
wires (Beru)
distributor & cap
OVP
air filter
fuel filter

I am not sure about idle control valve as being a cause of this problem. If it is I have no idea where it's located. If someone can point the location I will take it out and clean it. Any other ideas will be appreciated.

Sounds similar to my problem, although mine is not as severe as yours. Seems like a common problem. This idle problem may be caused by:
1. Throttle actuator (approx $1,100 ouch!)
2. Air mass meter
3. Wiring harness
4. Vacuum leak
5. Idle control valve

If it has K-Jet either a bad o2 sensor heater, bad wiring, or a sticky idle control valve.

Idle control valve is the most likely, especially if it stalls occasionally on hard stops.

Where is the idle control valve located? I would like to clean it out and see if it helps. Did search on this a lot but can't find anything that would help with the location. Also, any precautions to take before removing the valve.

On the M103 it's under the air filter housing -- three nuts on rubber mounts. Idel control valve is held down by a strap -- silver can with a single two wire connector and two large rubber hoses.

Unplug, unclamp, and work the hoses off. If the hoses are really hard, you should consider replacing them. Wash valve out with carb or brake parts cleaner until the solvent rund out clean, and re-install.

I'm not sure where the valve is on the M104 (twin cam).
