I have tried to answer the final question before without camera, but lets start with the heart of the story. Anone ever wonder where the spring came from?

Is this an engine oil pump?

I have the same situation. The spring is from the secondary pump check valve located in the shift housing. Drop the valve body, drop the shift housing with the plate. At the rear in a squared orifice will be the rest of the valve. Unscrew the housing from the plate to replace the valve. On this 126 the plastic valve housing broke and up to the pump she went, stripped the gear on the governor shaft, no upshift, no gov press. I do not have the part number with me at home but the cost was around 2 bucks.

This info is being provided by a clown that works in a dealership.

I was getting to that. This time I have a camera. I have been here a number of times and when asked found it hard to explain. So here is another picture:

Note the arrow pointing at new check valve #126 270 05 89!

And as Paul notes, that cute little spring locks the secondary pump and fractures the governor drive gear that runs off the trans output shaft.

At that point the trans has no governor pressure and won't shift.

Note the new gear has been installed.

And there is another one of those valves so we will replace it also:

I'll try to remember this.

Nice that the drive gear is plastic and shatters rather than being steel so that everything gets eaten up!
