Air-Cooled Motor Mount?

I have always wondered about this: in the lower air dam, on the passenger side, is a cutout, and behind it is an air intake, which travels straight back and outlets its cool air intake right on to the pass. side motor mount, which is located under the exhaust manifold. My question is, why?

By the way, I have installed a K & N air filter in place of the dirty MB one, and have noticed that the air is intaken behind the pass headlight housing. Can I route that intake which goes to the MM into the filter box?

I have the same thing on my C280. This is to keep the rubber in the mount from getting hot and drying out due to its location next to the exhaust manifold.

O.K., thanks a lot for the info--whenever I took the airbox off so I could see how much my headgasket was leaking I always saw that and wondered what it was for!
