96 Infrared remote question

I just found an IR remote from my last 96 S420 that I sold 2 years ago. Is there any way to make the remote work to open the doors and trunk for my 97 S500. The part number on the 96 remote is identical to the one on the 97. I tried the steps listed in the owners manual (pressing remote then turning the ignition swithch with the key within 30 sec) without success.

Is this something a dealer can do or am I SOL?

The key cannot be reprogrammed. It only works with its original vehicle.

It is worthless to you. An upright MercedesShop member would make an attempt to reunite the key with the present owner.

If indeed it is of no value to me, that's exactly what I'll do. Thanks.

guys... I was under the impression that only the new SMART key cannot be reprogrammed as the key is coded to the car. I am not aware that even the BLADE IR KEY cannot be sync to a different car. Can someone confirm?

The car in concern is a 92 W140. The Sync method is pressing the key and turning the lock on the door. However I could not sync a different key I got from EBay to my car!

Cut the story short, I super clue my original IR key as the casing was falling apart. However the fume from the glue killed my remote. I now cleaned the electrical board up so the red light comes on when I press but somehow I can't get my car to recognise it! Did I kill the key or you guys have a solution?

please advice. Thanks

On your glued-key problem, I'd guess you killed the key. If you tried synching it and it doesn't work, not much else I know of to do, especially since you are getting the battery indicator light to come on.

In regards to the older style keys, if the car is new enough to have DAS, then you won't be able to simply buy a key that needs to be cut, they are vehicle specific to even start the car. In regards to the IR unlocking, not 100% sure, I believe they are vehicle specific as well.
