Fan speed select swith problems in 89 190E

Let me see if I can explain this properly.

The fan speed select switch is stuck in the low fan position and will not move either direction.

I can get cold air by selecting AC and then depressing the vent button. Of course it only works if I am moving forward.

When I press the defrost button all hell breaks loose and the thing sounds like it has a obstruction in it. The fan sounds like it is hitting something.

The fan will not work in any other position or with anything selected on the climate control ..

Can you repair the selector or do you have to replace it and most importantly, how the heck to you get at it to take it out?

Thanks for any help you can give.

190e.

Mine did the same thing. I fixed mine for a few months, then the wife broke it again. So I "fixed" it so it would not go lower then the second speed. I'll try to explain. There are plastic and copper tensioned dents that the switch stops and rests on at each of the blower speeds. Usually at the lowest setting a piece of one of these plastic stops breaks off prohibiting or trapping the switch at the lowest setting. I operated on mine by cutting a small opening with a Dremel in the upper left region where the low speed area is. I bent the low speed copper tab slightly (the copper tabs make the electrical contacts for the different fan speeds) so the selector piece would rest slightly beyond the original stop. If you treat the fan switch gently at the lower speeds, not letting it slam or forcing it to the stop, it will be fine. But my wife got a bit aggresive with it and bent the copper stop causing it to lock up. Soooo I bent the taps so it stops at the second speed. Works fine and with an older car and an older fan the second speed is still slow.

Hope this make sense?

P.S. It is held in by two screws. Pry off the wood trim cover, Remove HVAC controls. Remove two screws and it comes out throught the HVAC openning.

results of your recommendations

I got the unit out and was actually able to open it up very easily. Seems it is held together with rubber rivets and the two parts came apart with a screwdriver very nicely. Just as you described one of the copper pieces had come off and wedged itself where it wasn't supposed to be. Put it back in place, lubbed everthing nicely, put it back together and it works like new.
