If Beru plug wires are better than, say, Bosch, can anyone explain why? They're priced higher than Bosch and the price might be justified if I understood why. Anyone? :)

Beru & Bosch are both OE suppliers & their OE quality parts are equal!! However when Bosch supplies Spark plug wire sets in the aftermarket they supply sub-standard (to OE) quality wire & ends. Even at dealer we get these aftermarket quality wire sets from Bosch. Beru normaly sells their OE quality in sets to aftermarket. Beru make some of the finest spark plugs that you can buy, ULTRA-X. And they are copper core.

Thanks for the reply. I think I'll save up my pennies for the Beru plug wires.

BYW, I replaced the distributor cap and rotor this weekend on my 560SEL (99700 miles). Old cap must have been welded on -- two of the 3 screws had to be soaked in Liquid Wrench for 30 minutes before they'd loosen, and the third was had to be broken loose by the local dealer's mechanic. It was on so tight, the plastic housing was completely cracked off around the screw. No way to tell it was the original or not. The contacts on the rotor and cap were so cruddy and eroded, I'm surprised it got 20mpg on the road. The idle has cleaned up really well -- I expect more when I add the new plugs and plug wires.

This forum has been great. I hope I get the chance to repay the wonderful advice I've gotten here.

On MB's the wires are copper core & rarely do they fail & need replacement! The wire ends are availible seperately & do fail. Too many shops replace wire sets when all that is needed is one or two ends.

I recently replaced my wires with a set of Jacob's Energy Wires, custom cut for my 190E. They are 8.5mm wires and are supposedly better insulated than the OE wiring. http://www.jacobselectronics.com/Wires.htm

Hype or Real? My performance is not terribly different...what do y'all think?

If the ignition system was capable of 50K+ volts then that type of wire would keep the voltage in & not allow bleed thru.

Al - did you say 20 mpg in a 560SEL?? wow....

420SEL 08-18-2000 05:37 PM

20mpg in a 560 shouldn't be that unbelievable. I consistantly get 24 miles per gallon in my 1986 420SEL with 170,000 miles. I also need to replace my distributor cap and rotor. Maybe it will improve when I do.

Are we talking about Canadian gallon(British)=4.56 litres or US gallon =3.8 or 9 litres?
